Earths: Rare in Time, Not Space?
We compare two recent astrobiological approaches to the solution of the problem of the “Great Silence” (or Fermi’s paradox): the “rare Earth” hypothesis of Ward and Brownlee, and the phase-transition scenario of Annis. We show that they have important similarities, as far as self-selection of intelligent observers is concerned. In order to better illuminate the differences, we consider the dura...
متن کاملSpace-time resonances
This article is a short exposition of the space-time resonances method. It was introduced by Masmoudi, Shatah, and the author, in order to understand global existence for nonlinear dispersive equations, set in the whole space, and with small data. The idea is to combine the classical concept of resonances, with the feature of dispersive equations: wave packets propagate at a group velocity whic...
متن کاملResonances for Obstacles in Hyperbolic Space
We consider scattering by star-shaped obstacles in hyperbolic space and show that resonances satisfy a universal bound Imλ ≤ − 2 which is optimal in dimension 2. In odd dimensions we also show that Imλ ≤ −μρ for a universal constant μ, where ρ is the (hyperbolic) diameter of the obstacle; this gives an improvement for small obstacles. In dimensions 3 and higher the proofs follow the classical v...

HAL is a multi-disciplinary open access archive for the deposit and dissemination of scientific research documents, whether they are published or not. The documents may come from teaching and research institutions in France or abroad, or from public or private research centers. L’archive ouverte pluridisciplinaire HAL, est destinée au dépôt et à la diffusion de documents scientifiques de niveau...
متن کاملInvited Commentary Invited Commentary: Genes, Environment, and Hybrid Vigor
In the 1950s, case-control studies of smoking and lung cancer established a paradigm for epidemiologic studies of risk factors for chronic diseases. Since then, thousands of case-control studies have examined possible associations of countless risk factors with numerous diseases, rarely finding associations as strong or consistent as that of smoking with lung cancer. Recently, researchers have ...
